1. Dry ice makers and ice houses
These businesses make or stock dry ice every day and usually sell the widest range of sizes. Some sell by the pound with a minimum. Columbia Market Food and Dry Ice in Columbia Heights, MN, for example, sells 10 lb blocks only (no pellets) with a 5 lb minimum, and says it sells dry ice year-round to the public.
Some sell ahead online for pickup. Cayman Dry Ice in Ann Arbor, MI, takes online orders for pickup, says orders are usually ready in an hour, and asks customers to order online for anything over 10 lb.
2. Welding and industrial gas suppliers
Many gas suppliers sell dry ice from their branches. We list Airgas Dry Ice branches taken from Airgas’s own branch pages. Whether a branch sells to walk-in customers varies by location, so call first.
3. Grocery stores
Some grocery chains carry dry ice at some stores. We have checked Hy-Vee, Publix and Smart & Final against their own websites. Availability varies by store, and Smart & Final lists it as in-store only.
What to ask before you go
- Do you have dry ice in stock today, and until what time?
- Pellets, blocks or both? Columbia Market, for one, sells blocks only.
- Is there a minimum purchase, and what is the price per pound?
- Do you need ID? Cayman Dry Ice requires buyers to be 18 or older with ID at pickup.
- Can I walk in, or do I need to order ahead?
Bring the right container
Bring an insulated cooler, but do not latch it airtight. The Compressed Gas Association says never to store or transport dry ice in airtight containers, and to open windows or keep fresh air flowing in the vehicle. Cayman Dry Ice tells customers the same: bring your own cooler and make sure it is not airtight.
