Dry Ice in a Cooler: Camping and Keeping Food Frozen

Short answerDry ice keeps food frozen for days. Plan on 5 to 10 pounds lost every 24 hours, wrap it, leave the lid unlatched, and keep the cooler out of the car cabin and tent.

Packing the cooler

  • Wrap the dry ice in newspaper or a towel and put it on top or bottom, away from food you don't want frozen solid.
  • Fill empty space with paper.
  • Leave the lid unlatched so the gas can escape.

Safety on the trip

  • Ride the cooler in the trunk or truck bed, not the car cabin.
  • Never keep it in a tent or camper while people sleep.
  • Handle it with insulated gloves.
