How to Store Dry Ice (and Where Not To)

Short answerStore dry ice in a foam or insulated cooler with a loose lid, in a ventilated space, away from kids and pets. Never seal it airtight.

Best containers

  • A foam (styrofoam) cooler: insulated and not airtight.
  • A regular cooler with the lid left unlatched.

Never store it in

  • A sealed plastic bottle or glass jar.
  • A small closet, walk-in cooler or other confined space.
  • A car cabin.

Keep it longer

Wrap it in newspaper or a towel and fill empty space in the cooler. Expect it to shrink about 5 to 10 pounds a day either way.
